As part of the redesign of the Binnenland website, we were faced with the decision of which font to use. Our requirements were based on the technical appeal and character of the previous used typeface T-Star TW, but we wanted to set a clear distinction and highlight a new technical aspect.
Technical typefaces are always connected with a specific function or the way they were drawn. Our study takes up the idea of Aldo Novarese who created the Eurostile typeface in 1962 — a simple modular sans-serif font, which refers to the Microgramma (typeface) published ten years earlier. This typeface, designed for the well-known Turin-based Nebiolo typefoundry together with Alessandro Butti, featured only capitals and followed the technical intention of offering a new solution for the emerging monitors. From today's perspective, their super-elliptical letter shape seems to symbolise the emerging dominance of cathode ray tube television screens.
Today, Eurostile stands for simplicity and, with its unconventional form, still represents modernity. In this we have seen the basis for our own research. BL – Micronova Beta is a reinterpretation of this type issue and describes today’s trends for screen fonts with a large x-height, short ascenders and descenders. The clean, linear appearance of this desing has been created using a structured grid system, but leaves the strictness wherever the declination seems beneficial.
