BL — Nova Custom Typeface

Custom Typeface for Internal Use / 2021-10-26

In the course of the Binnenland redesign, we were confronted with the the choice of typeface. Our requirements were based on the technical appeal and character of the previous used typeface T-Star TW, but we wanted to set a clear distinction and highlight a new technical aspect.
Technical typefaces are always connected with a specific function or the way they were drawn. Our study takes up the idea of Aldo Novarese who created the Eurostile typeface in 1962 — a simple modular sans-serif font, which refers to the Microgramma (typeface) published ten years earlier. This typeface, designed for the well-known Turin-based Nebiolo typefoundry together with Alessandro Butti, featured only capitals and followed the technical intention of offering a new solution for the emerging monitors. From today’s perspective, their ‘angular roundings’ appear to be emblematic for the emerging dominance of the television tube.
Today, the Eurostile stands for simplicity, and with its unconventional base form for modernity. In this we have seen the basis for our own explorations. BL – Nova is a reinterpretation of this type issue and describes today’s trends for screen fonts with a large x-height, short ascenders and descenders. The design of the characters, wherever the systematic declination seemed beneficial, follows the system idea. Differences were incorporated as individual characteristics in the single character of the font.

BL — Nova :
We still appriciate the simple modular principles in type design. These give the typefaces the required graphical and technical appearance. The inclusion of new technologies opens up a wide range of possibilities.
